OAA BazaarOctober 8, 2013:
2013 Bazaar Menu, Schedule, and Online Coupon
The Okinawa Association of America (OAA) is having its annual Bazaar on Sunday, October 13, at the OAA Center in Gardena. Spend the afternoon with family and friends while enjoying the flavors and performing arts of Okinawa! This is the OAA’s only annual fundraiser event, so please come out to support and, most of all, to enjoy family, friends, and Okinawan culture!

Orion Beer Commercial in Los Angeles
Orion Beer, the 5th largest beer brewery in Japan, will be filming their next commercial here in Los Angeles! Using the popular Okinawan pop song “Ojii Jiman no Orion Biiru” by Begin, the commercial will feature Okinawa Association of America (OAA) members and the local Uchinaanchu community at various LA landmarks such as Venice Beach, Beverly Hills, and Katsuya Restaurant (Hollywood). They really want an emphasis on intergenerational communities, so they invite Uchinaanchu of all ages (minimum 20 years old) to sing and dance — arri kanpai!!!

2013 Okinawan Bon Dance & Picnic
The Okinawa Association of America (OAA)‘s Annual Picnic has been a tradition for local Okinawans and Okinawans-at-heart since its first incarnation in the 1930′s. The picnic has always been a highly anticipated event for families enjoying summer afternoons of homemade treats, family games, and Okinawan cultural performances. It has also become the venue for the OAA to award its annual scholarships to graduating high school students.

High School Students (Extended Deadline: June 14)

Applications for the OAA’s annual scholarship awards for 2013 high school graduates are now available! Applicant requirements include. The awards will be based primarily on academic accomplishments with due consideration given to extra-curricular and community activities and financial needs. The scholarship awards will be presented at the OAA’s Annual Picnic at Whittier Narrows Recreation Park on Sunday, July 7, 2013. Read more...

We are honored to have 2 Uchinanchu filmmakers presenting their short films at this year’s Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival (presented by Visual Communications)! Every year this festival provides a venue for the brightest talents within the Asian American and Asian international communities, bringing together hundreds of feature-length and short-form films/videos to be showcased over the course of the festival’s 1-week duration. Okinawan Music & Dance Showcase | 2013 Utayabira Wuduyabira
On Sunday, May 5th, the Okinawa Association of America (OAA) will be presenting their 18th biennial Utayabira Wuduyabira concert at the James R. Armstrong Theatre (Torrance, California). Translated as “let’s sing, let’s dance” in Uchinaaguchi (the Okinawan language), this showcase of traditional performing arts will feature local musicians (sanshin, koto, taiko) and dancers coming together to celebrate and share the Okinawan culture for audiences of all generations and backgrounds. Okinawan Heart & Spirit: Informal Lecture by Shinichi Maehara
The Okinawa Association of America (OAA) will be hosting an informal talk with Shinichi Maehara on Saturday, March 23, 3:00PM at the OAA Center (16500 S. Western Ave. Gardena 90247, FREE ADMISSION). The event will be the first in an ongoing series of lectures presented by the OAA’s Bunka-Bu (Culture Committee). Mr. Maehara, a retired executive director at Okinawa Television (OTV), will be discussing the preservation and sharing of the Okinawan heart and spirit by the Okinawan diaspora. Read more...

Uchina Junior Study ProgramFebruary 28, 2013:
Study Abroad in Okinawa! Now Accepting Applications
The Uchina Junior Study Program (formerly the Junior Study Tour) is an annual immersion program that brings 15 middle and high school students to the islands of Okinawa. Sponsored by the Okinawa Prefectural Government, elected students are given an all-expense-paid trip to study Okinawan history, culture, society, and Diaspora, with an emphasis on nature, peace, and identity. Students will also be given the opportunity to interact with Uchinanchu from around the world as well as students from Okinawa, with the hope that bonds and understandings will develop between overseas Uchinanchu and their mother island. Legend of HagoromoFebruary 18, 2013:
"Legend of Hagoromo" Opera (PHOTOS)
The Ship of the Ryukyu’s The Legend of Hagoromo was a success! Last Saturday, the James R. Armstrong Theatre in Torrance was almost filled with Uchinanchu and Uchinanchu-at-heart (approx. 320 attendees), many of whom had nothing but positive things to say about the performances! The young cast, dancers, and musicians from Okinawa put on an emotionally moving kageki (opera), which was preceded by a set of 7 traditional and popular dances. The dialogue and songs were entirely in Uchinaaguchi (the Okinawan language) with English subtitles projected above the stage. Read more...

Okinawa-based Theatre Production Comes to Torrance!
On Saturday, February 9th, an Okinawa-based production group called SHIP OF THE RYUKYU will be presenting their theatrical rendition of a popular Okinawan folk tale in Torrance, California’s James R. Armstrong Theatre. “The Legend of Hagoromo” tells the story of a mortal man’s marriage to a celestial woman, as performed through Okinawan Kageki (opera). Expect a mixture of lively traditional music, dramatic scenes of grace and serenity, and most importantly, “Chimugukuru” (the Okinawan heart and spirit)! Read more...

60+ volunteers represented the Okinawa Association of America in this year?s Nisei Week Grand Parade! Approx. 36 of them wore kasuri pattern kimonos and danced to choreographed Okinawan and Japanese Bon-Odori!
