Uchinaaguchi (Okinawan Language) Class

Chogi Higa founded the Ucchinaaguchi Class in 2002 in an effort to preserve and broaden the natural language of Okinawa. As the founder and Shinshii (instructor), he believes that in order to fully understand the Okinawan culture, one must also become familiar with its language.

The Uchinaaguchi class, “Katayabira Uchinaaguchi (Let’s talk in Okinawan language)” usually meets on the 2nd Friday of every month from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM in room #103 at the OAA Center. A new Uchinaaguchi class for beginners, “Hajimirana Uchinaaguchi (Lets Begin Uchinaaguchi)” usually meets on the 2nd Saturday of every month from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM.

Both classes are open to all OAA members and visitors. There is a $2 donation per class for OAA members and a $5 donation per class for visiting non-OAA members to cover the expenses for photocopies, coffee, tea, and snacks during Yuntaku-hintaku (
break time).

The class is conducted in both Uchinaaguchi and English. The course is predominantly based on learning the basic vocabulary, grammar, dialogue and conversation.
